KAED UNIVERSAL DESIGN UNIT (KUDU)
KAED Universal Design Unit (KUDU) is a unit formed under Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) as a business wing of the Research Management Centre (RMC), IIUM. KUDU had started its operation on 16th June 2008 and the unit draws expertise available from among the academic lecturers of Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) and also collaboration of expertise from other universities locally and internationally that has mutual understanding within the construction field.

KUDU consists of several academicians, professionals, consultants and staffs who are involved in various expert fields, architectural, and constructions related works.

SCOPE OF WORK AND EXPERTISE 
The scope of work of KUDU consisting of all of the following that comes with the synergy objective to provide a total consultation and services package as follows:
  • Conducting hands on Access Audit Workshop with Local Authority, Government agencies and NGOs.
  • Conducting hands on Access Audit Training Module for professionals, academicians, administrative staffs and students in the construction industry / field to enhance awareness and to educate them about the importance of providing for the disable. 
  • Conducting seminars and giving talks on “Universal Design in The Built Environment”, “Universal Design towards Social Sustainability”, “Creating Accessible Environment for All” and “Accessible Built Environment” by a renowned expert professor / architect on Universal Design topics.
  • Organizing international conferences and national product design competition that based on Universal Design and designing for the disable.
  • Consultancy in existing / refurbishing building related to Accessibility and Universal Design,
  • Development and promotion of Malaysian Standards (MS) and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) Building Guidelines related to Architecture and Building,
  • Promotion and encourage users of Persons with Disabilities Act 2008 and UBBL 34A that is directly related to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs),
  • Conducting Research and Development (R&D) on Accessibility in public spaces and buildings including heritage and religious buildings,
  • Constant Research and Development (R&D) works related to Universal Design, dealing with Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), elderly and the ageing population, children and children with disabilities, Social Architecture towards Sustainability, Access Audit consultancy report papers, users’ perception and construction project management.  
  • Providing Universal Design / Barrier Free Architectural consultation and references for Postgraduate students and practice firm,
  • Providing services on revising architectural drawings for complying with MS and PwDs Act and submission purposes for Principal Submitting Person (PSP).
  • Founders of KUDU are referral persons on Universal Design and Accessibility as well as Access Audits Consultants by Local Authorities, Government agencies and NGOs in local and international organizations.
